Get A ROOM! Giveaway Unveiling

March 10, 2011

Do not adjust your monitors, this is a test of the r:u Design Crew. The photo below is–well actually was–the winning submission of our “Get A ROOM!” Giveaway. The client, Adam, was frustrated with his space. He had remodeled his entire condo, but ran out of steam when it came time for the dining room. He didn’t know what to do or where to turn. That was until he miraculously stumbled upon our “Get A ROOM!” giveaway where we paired our complimentary design services with a free piece of furniture from KALA Studios, a custom art piece from Modern Bird Studios, and a shopping spree at Sukio Design Co. And the rest, as they say, is history.

We had some crazy ideas for this project. For starters, we wondered if we could push Kaleo (KALA Studios) and Gregg (Modern Bird Studios) into a collaboration. While it would have been great to have a dining table from Kaleo, we thought that this space begged, nay PLEADED, for something fun and funky. We proposed the idea of a wrap-around slatted shelf paired with a minimal upper cabinet. But we didn’t want just any doors, we wanted Gregg to bring his technique of making custom art pieces to the world of furniture. With that, he made some killer kustom doors for Kaleo’s kabinet. It was a blast working with them on this project.

Floating Ultracraft Acrilux cabinets were topped with a concrete counter from Concreate and a trough sink for keeping your beers on ice. Orange penny round tiles from Üson Design Solutions finish off the bar, while a MASHstudios LAXseries Edge Table and Real Good Chairs from BluDot complete the space. There were many environmentally sustainable features included in this project that we’ll be talking about in an upcoming post. In the meantime, you can see how we organized the space below:

As I mentioned last week, we were lucky enough to be featured in the magazine, DC Modern Luxury (on page 103). The experience couldn’t have been better. Our photographer, Ben Tankersley was able to put us at ease. (Check out his blog and website!) At the end of the day though, it was weird to be standing there under the lights with a perma-smile. Let’s just say models make it look real easy! He was nice enough to take some pictures of the finished space and share them with us. With that said, r:u ready to see the finished product?!?! Then che-che-che-check it out!!!

Who's a pretty girl?

No, she doesn't bite. You can go ahead and pet her--just be gentle!

I could actually use a drink (or 5) right now...

Yes, that is chalkboard paint. How else are you supposed to share the dinner party menu with your guests?

We hope you enjoyed the project as much as we enjoyed designing it! But the place isn’t complete just yet–a little birdie told me that Adam recently visited Sukio to pick out some accessories for his space. Speaking of, Sukio is in the running for “Best New Retail Store” in Washington City Paper. Show your love and vote here!

Next week I’m going to chat about some of my favorite drool-worthy chairs. So put your thinking caps on, and be prepared to share some great finds!
